The 8 Core Capacities

Braking Power

How well you stop, cut, and absorb.

Braking Power is the most under-measured — and most injury-relevant — capacity in sport. Athletes who can decelerate stay healthy and cut sharper. We measure asymmetry aggressively because a 10% left-right gap here is a torn ACL waiting.

Marcus's Score
71
Decel index: 4.6 m/s² · Hop-stop asymmetry: 4%
Strong control. Asymmetry under 5% — clean bilateral mechanics.

DEC

Deceleration Index

Equipment
Timing gates · force plate landing pad
Protocol
Sprint at 90% max, brake to full stop in a marked zone. Three reps.
Measures
Peak braking force (N) · Braking rate (m/s²) · Deceleration distance
Why it matters
The forgotten side of speed. Athletes who can't brake can't cut, can't change direction, and get hurt.

HOP

Single-Leg Hop-Stop

Equipment
Force plate · single-leg landing zone
Protocol
Hop forward, land single-leg, hold 3 sec. Three reps each leg.
Measures
Impact force (N) · Ground contact time · L/R asymmetry (%)
Why it matters
The single-leg version of deceleration. Asymmetry >10% is a strong ACL-injury predictor.
Developing
<15% asymmetry
D1
<8% asymmetry
Pro
<4% asymmetry
DL

Drop Landing Assessment

Equipment
20-inch box · force plate
Protocol
Step off box, land two feet, stick the landing. Video-analyzed.
Measures
Peak vertical force · Knee valgus angle (°) · Symmetry
Why it matters
Landing mechanics separate athletes who stay healthy from athletes who don't. Video-scored for compensations.

Eccentric Utilization Ratio

Equipment
Force plate
Protocol
CMJ vs. squat jump. Difference reveals stretch-shortening use.
Measures
Jump-height ratio (CMJ/SJ) · Reactive strength index
Why it matters
How well you use the pre-stretch. Low EUR = you're leaving power on the table on every cut.
