The Position That Lives Inside Six Meters
An attackman in a competitive lacrosse game operates inside a six-meter radius around the goal for roughly seventy percent of his possessions. He is rarely asked to sprint in a straight line. He is rarely asked to cover ground in the manner of a midfielder. He is asked, instead, to produce a shot from a constrained angle, with a defender on his hip, against a goalie who has him sighted, in roughly a half- second of release window. The athletic profile is unique. It is closer to a basketball point guard in the post than it is to a soccer striker or a football receiver.
And yet the off-season training most attackmen receive looks nothing like the position. The template is borrowed: from football, from track, from soccer. The result is an athlete who tests well on straight-ahead speed, on broad-jump distance, and on bench press but who cannot generate a clean shot from the right wing in traffic when the defender has him in proper position.
The Four Capacities That Decide Whether an Attackman Finishes the Season as the Scoring Threat
VICTEVO measures four position-specific capacities for attackmen. They are tested with load profiles that approximate the actual demand of the position rather than borrowed from generic athletic testing.
The first is rotational power from constrained positions. An attackman's shot rarely comes from a clean stride into the cage. It comes from a roll, a dodge, a question-mark cut, or a feed received under pressure. The power the athlete can generate from a planted, asymmetric, constrained position is the power that produces the actual shot. We test this with a half-kneeling rotational medicine-ball throw, a single-leg rotational cable protocol, and a constrained- position shot-velocity measurement. The score is the answer to a question coaches have been asking without numbers: how hard can this player shoot when he is not clean?
The second is change-of-direction efficiency under defensive contact. An attackman beats his defender on a step, a roll, or a hesitation move — almost always with body contact involved. The classical agility tests measure none of this. We test it with a constrained dodging protocol against a held padded resistance, scoring both the speed of the change-of-direction and the consistency of execution across repetitions. The number tells us whether the athlete is actually deceptive against contact or only deceptive in space.
The third is asymmetric strength and resilience. The attackman carries his stick in one dominant hand for nearly every possession he plays. The rotational load on his trunk is fundamentally asymmetric across a season. The attackmen who finish the season healthy are the ones whose non-dominant side has been built up to a tolerable margin of the dominant side. We test this with a bilateral isometric protocol, a non-dominant-hand rotational throw, and a single- side trunk endurance score. The asymmetry number is one of the most reliable predictors of late-season injury we track.
The fourth is shot-decision speed under defensive pressure. The attackman has, at most, a half-second between the moment he sees the shooting lane open and the moment the defender closes it. We test this with a sport-specific decision protocol that presents short video clips of defensive situations and measures both the speed and the accuracy of the shot-or-pass decision. The score is the difference between an attackman who shoots when the lane is open and one who hesitates and loses the moment.
What an Off-Season Built on Those Numbers Looks Like
An attackman off-season designed against this workup contains far more constrained- position rotational work and far more asymmetric resilience work than the average plan. The straight-ahead speed work is reduced. The dodging and change-of-direction work is loaded against actual resistance, not against cones. And the decision work is integrated with the shooting work — every shot in every session is preceded by a read.
We have measured attackmen who entered an VICTEVO off-season scoring 1.4 goals per game and finished the next season at 2.6 goals per game. The improvement was not more shots. It was more makeable shots — shots taken from positions the athlete had not been able to produce velocity from a year earlier.
What This Means for the Coach, the Parent, and the Athlete
For the coach: the attackman is the most spatially constrained, most asymmetrically loaded, and most decision-dense scoring position in the sport. Train him against that profile or accept that he will plateau as a feeder.
For the parent: the youth attackman who is rewarded for speed and skill is on a track. The track ends at high school, when the speed advantage shrinks and the skill advantage equalizes. The players who continue scoring beyond high school are the ones who developed the constrained-position power and the asymmetric resilience before they had to.
For the athlete: every coach you play for will tell you to work on your shot. The shot is one of four capacities. Without the other three, the shot does not produce goals at the next level.
