Beyond the Octagon: Uriah Hall

Hall was born in Kingston, Jamaica and immigrated to New York City, where he began training at Tiger Schulmann MMA at age 16 in 2001 for self-defense. He became a second-degree black belt in the Tiger Schulmann system, won regional Muay Thai and grappling titles, and earned a spot on TUF 17 (Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen), which aired in 2013. He described his TUF preparation as 'training like Rocky in the mountains.'

Hall's knockout of Adam Cella on TUF 17 with a spinning wheel kick became one of the most spectacular finishes in the show's history. In the UFC proper, he stopped Gegard Mousasi, Thiago Santos, and Anderson Silva — the legendary Brazilian's final UFC loss — at his 2021 peak.

'The moment it hit me was when Silva did a spider pose in front of me and I was like, oh f***, I'm fighting Anderson Silva. My idol is my rival.'

Hall announced his retirement from MMA on August 10, 2022, finishing with a 17-11 record after losses to Khamzat Chimaev and Andre Muniz. He subsequently entered boxing, facing Le'Veon Bell in October 2022. After retiring, he spoke with ESPN about falling into a 'deep depression' and experiencing suicidal ideation — becoming an important voice for mental health in combat sports.

Hall is one of the most dangerous strikers in UFC middleweight history — spinning hook kicks, wheel kicks, and oblique strikes from unpredictable angles.
