Ohio Iron
Garbrandt grew up in poverty in Uhrichsville, Ohio and started boxing at 15 to find purpose and stay off the streets. He was 32-1 as an amateur boxer before transitioning to MMA. His story is inseparable from Maddux Maple, a young cancer patient he met at a local children's hospital.
Garbrandt made a promise to Maddux: he'd fight his way to the UFC title and dedicate it to him. 'I made a promise to him that I was going to make it to the UFC and take you with me.' At UFC 207, in front of the world, he kept that promise.
UFC 207: The Masterclass
After going 6-0 in the UFC, Garbrandt stunned Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 in December 2016 with a five-round masterclass in movement, feinting, and precise counters. He won the bantamweight title with one of the most celebrated performance in the division's history — and dedicated every second of it to Maddux Maple.
I started boxing at 15 to stay out of fighting in the streets and to give life purpose.

No Love. UFC 207. The promise made good.
Resilience
After his title loss to TJ Dillashaw and a run of KO defeats, Garbrandt rebuilt with wins over Trevin Jones and Brian Kelleher. He bounced back with a decision win over Long Xiao at UFC 326 in March 2026, showing continued resilience. He remains with Team Alpha Male in Sacramento — the family that built the champion.
The Boxer's Gift
Garbrandt is one of the most naturally gifted boxers in MMA history — head movement, footwork, and timing at elite level. He generates stunning one-shot KO power through precise weight transfer and sharp counter-timing. When he is on, few fighters in any division are as fun to watch.
He helped me beat cancer and when I was down he made me feel up.
The Pact
Garbrandt and Maddux co-wrote a book called 'The Pact' about their friendship. He trains 2–3 times daily and cites his mother Jessica Enos and Maddux Maple as his personal heroes. Some promises are made on a handshake. Some are kept on the biggest stage in the sport.
